4th Annual House Party – Wing Luke Museum

House Party is an annual event hosted by the Wing Luke Museum of the Asian American Experience. Featuring exclusive performances, music, workshops and more by local APA artists, the event serves to bring the community together, as well as promote local creatives, community dialogue, and the museum’s exhibits.

Concept

At the time, the event committee was considering having the event in-person, and I wanted the event to feel welcoming and accessible, while still having the anticipatory feeling you get when you don’t know exactly what to expect. I embraced the “House Party” namesake as the theme, keeping in mind the casual thrill of going to a late night party hosted in a friend of a friend’s home and the aesthetic of 90’s raves and punk concerts.

Inspiration

Inspiration

I drew colors directly from the pages of rave and concert flyers from the 90’s. Because I was embracing the xeroxed look, that meant all color came from the pages these designs would be “printed on,” and all designs would be rendered in black, and I distressed all designs so they would appear as though they had gone through several rounds of copying and printing.

Branding

The branding was informed by the techniques used in 90’s flyers and by the Wing Luke Museum’s values.

I focused on 90’s rave flyers which relied heavily on collaging and xeroxing. Cut-out photographs and illustrations were striking and open for interpretation, and text was cut and pasted haphazardly around them. Everything is printed with black ink.

The Wing Luke Museum’s mission is to provide a place for community members to tell their stories. I delved into the Wing Luke Museum’s database of archived photography and found photographs that, though they lacked context, would allow viewers to find joy in this little snippet of community history.

Production

I created both digital and print assets for this event, including Instagram posts and stories, a Mailchimp email header and footer, website assets, ads, and T-shirt and tote bag designs.
